Sahara Group Foundation launches recycling hubs in Jigawa, Kaduna

The Sahara Group Foundation has launched two recycling hubs in Jigawa and Kaduna states to improve structured waste management.

The facilities, located at Gidan Hakimi in Shuwarin LGA of Jigawa and Asharami Retail Station in Badiko, Kaduna south LGA, are the foundation’s 21st and 22nd Sahara Go Recycling hubs nationwide.

The Jigawa hub was launched in partnership with the King’s Council, Shuwarin, while the Kaduna facility was developed in collaboration with Asharami Synergy, a sister company of the Sahara Group.

According to the foundation, the initiative is designed to encourage waste recycling while enabling households to generate income from recyclable materials, in line with Sahara Group’s sustainability agenda.

Chidilim Menakaya, director of Sahara Group Foundation, said the project demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to delivering community-driven environmental solutions through partnerships.

“By partnering with institutions and sister companies that understand local needs and realities, we are building a recycling ecosystem that communities can own, sustain, and benefit from over the long term,” she said.

The unveiling ceremonies were attended by representatives of the King’s Council, officials of the Jigawa state government, community leaders and residents, as well as the management of Asharami Synergy.

Speaking at the inauguration in Jigawa, Bashir Abdullahi, the Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shuwarin, said the recycling hub addresses the community’s longstanding waste disposal challenges.

“For years, our people have had no organised way to deal with waste beyond burning or dumping it by the roadside,” he said.

“This hub gives our young people and our women a way to earn from something that used to just pollute our surroundings.”

At the Kaduna event, Aliyu Mabai, manager of Asharami Retail Station in Badiko, said hosting the recycling hub aligns with the company’s commitment to responsible business practices.

“We are glad to host this recycling hub on our premises,” he said.

“It gives our customers and neighbours a simple way to recycle, and fits with what Asharami Synergy stands for as a responsible business.”

The foundation also announced plans to establish another recycling hub in Kano state in the coming weeks.

It said the planned expansion follows recent engagements with Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, who expressed support for the initiative.

According to the foundation, the Sahara Go Recycling programme has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of waste materials and supported over 2,000 livelihoods across Nigeria since its launch.
